What is Adult Cardiac Surgery?

Adult cardiac surgery is a branch of medicine that aims to treat heart and major vessel diseases through surgical means. It is generally applied to treat heart conditions such as valvular diseases, vascular occlusions, arrhythmias, and aortic pathologies that occur in individuals over the age of 18. Thanks to technological advancements and increased surgical experience, surgeries in this field are now performed with high success rates.

Which Diseases Can Be Treated?

Adult cardiac surgery plays an effective role in the treatment of many heart diseases:

  • Coronary artery disease (bypass surgery)
  • Heart valve diseases (mitral, aortic, tricuspid valve surgeries)
  • Aortic aneurysm and dissection
  • Arrhythmias (ablation, pacemaker implantation)
  • Heart tumors
  • Heart failure surgery (LVAD, supportive surgeries before heart transplantation)

Surgical Methods

Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG)

In this method, which is used when the vessels supplying blood to the heart muscle are blocked, the blocked vessels are bypassed with arterial or venous grafts, restoring blood flow to the heart.

Heart Valve Surgery

Covers damaged due to reasons such as calcification, shrinkage, or leakage are repaired or replaced with biological/metal covers.

Aortic Surgery

In cases of aortic dilation (aneurysm) or rupture (dissection), the damaged vessel segment is replaced with a synthetic graft.

Cardiac Arrhythmia Surgery

For heart rhythm disorders that cannot be controlled with medication, ablation or permanent pacemaker implantation may be performed.

Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery

In suitable patients, surgical techniques performed with small incisions offer advantages in terms of both aesthetics and recovery.
